Hello everyone,

Today's patch is primarily to prepare some behind the scenes things for the upcoming Valentine's Day event and rollout some fixes but we had some new features ready to go so we included them!

WARNING: This patch includes new assets we will be needing for some upcoming content. Unfortunately this might trigger a big update and some redundant data might be re-downloaded. We apologize in advance and we are working on improving our systems so future patches will be small and quick to download. Thanks for your patience!

World Map

We're excited to share with you the redesigned world map experience! The old static world map was replaced with a dynamic world map system packed with features! Players will now be able to see the minimap for all accessible maps on demand!

For each map, the minimap can now be panned and zoomed in a fully resizable window. Players will also be able to see NPC icons for all maps from the world map which should make it a lot easier to find NPCs, especially when questing! Additionally, for the current map the NPC quest indicators will appear on the map so players can quickly and easily find new quests. To get started use the ALT+M shortcut or click the world map icon near the minimap in the top right corner. This feature also includes a new location linking feature, check the next section for more details!

Quest and Location Linking

Continuing from our last update of supporting item linking in the chat, it is now possible to share a location on the world map or share the details of an active quest! Just like item linking, shift + right clicking can be used to link locations and quests!

How to Share a Quest:

  1. Open your quest journal
  2. Shift + Right Click the quest name

Now you can easily share the details of your quest with a friend or ask a stranger for some help!

Chat and UI Fixes

2025-01-31-20-48-27-capture.png

While we were happy with the release of the new chat box, barring the minor issues that required some hot fixes, we were still not ultimately satisfied with the performance in some cases. Notably, resizing the chat box would cause FPS to drop until resizing was completed. Since we already had plans to invest heavily into the chat box for the future (e.g. item linking, quest linking, location linking, etc.) we rewrote the guts of the chat for maximum performance. We now use a "virtualized" system internally which has maximum performance! As a result, players should not be able to perceive any change in performance when using the new chat.

Additionally, we enhanced some of the core systems around chat and UI to fix some odd edge cases with input focus. For example, we fixed the issue where pressing enter in a private message would switch to the chat instead of staying in the private messages.  We added a new feature for our new UI elements such as the chat box, so that the position and size of the chat box will be saved between gaming sessions. Finally, it is now possible to resize the system part of the chat by dragging the handle between the two sections!

NPC Dialog Background

2025-01-31-20-45-17-capture.png

ROSE Online's NPC and Event dialogs are unique but they are not without their issues. Specifically, it has generally been very difficult to read the text on this dialogs since they did not have a background and the light font often did not contrast well with the background. Internally on the team, we lamented this situation for a long time and some of our team members are unshakably convinced their eyesight has suffered as a result. At long last we have added a background to this dialog to improve the experience. We are sorry we did not do it sooner!

Misc Performance Fixes

2025-01-31-20-55-01-capture.png

Besides the previously mentioned chat box performance improvements, we're also rolling out some improvements for our updater and for the client running on machines with non-ascii usernames. Thanks to the help from members of our Japanese and Korean communities, we were able to find and fix a bug related to the recent clan mark updates that was causing degraded performance on some machines. Additionally, we've rebuilt the core logic of our updater to make it faster and more accurately report progress. Users should no longer experience the dreaded "stuck at 100% bug".

New Camera Physics

Recently we identified that camera collision calculations were particularly slow (up to 16% of frame time!). Once we saw this, we could not unsee it, so we took the opportunity to move the camera to the new physics engine. As a result, performance sky rocketed but more importantly the camera is a lot smoother now! Especially when colliding with objects the previous "stuttering" should now be a thing of the past. Here's a before and after comparison:

Misc Fixes

We strive to achieve maximum quality and polish for the game, especially so we can attract new players! As such the team has been busy fixing many minor issues in NPC dialogues, item textures and other areas. All the details are captured in the changelog below, but we wanted to bring attention to the work as it's part of the necessary steps to see us out of Early Access!

Phoenix Gun

At long last, the final faith weapon is here. For years we have had the Faith weapons available which included a weapon for every type...except a gun! We are happy to say that the Phoenix Gun has finally made it to the game to complete the set! Collectors rejoice! More details will be available in our Item Mall notes.
